“Gracias por hacer todo lo que hacen por mi hija,” fue como Shristi Shrestha, organizadora principal y conservacionista y activista nepalí, cerró su presentación de apertura de la Cumbre de la Red de Mujeres en la Naturaleza. De principio no entendí lo que quiso decir, pero después de analizarlo un par de segundos entendí a lo que se refería. Todas y cada una de nosotras estamos trabajando a diario para un mejor mundo, no solamente para nuestros propios hogares, regiones, familias, biodiversidad, sino para los del mundo entero. Nuestras acciones forman ondas y ecos que llegan a todos los rincones del planeta de alguna manera u otra.
La Cumbre de la Red de Mujeres en la Naturaleza (Women in Nature Network - WiNN) es un evento internacional que se llevó a cabo en Kathmandú, Nepal, con la intención de conectar a mujeres trabajando en conservación ambiental este septiembre 2022. Fui becada por WiNN para participar en este evento y les estoy eternamente agradecida por confiar e invertir en mí. WiNN es un grupo internacional de mujeres en la conservación ambiental. Su Cumbre WiNN es anual, cada año en un lugar diferente del planeta. Sus becas están abiertas a cualquier mujer de cualquier lugar.
Me es imposible expresar lo inspirador que fue conocer a tantas mujeres conservacionistas de tantos países haciendo tanto trabajo tan impresionante. Me di cuenta que el desempleo en el gremio de la conservación no solo es un problema en México ni en Latinoamérica, sino en todo el mundo. Durante el evento hubo presentaciones sobre ecofeminismo, activismo, salud, autocuidado, ciencia, entre otros temas, y participación de mujeres locales al igual que internacionales. Presenciar tanto talento y tanto poder en un solo lugar la hace a una sentirse muy pequeña.
Esta sensación de “no soy tan increíble como ellas” duró algunos días colgada de mí. Pero durante el cierre de las presentaciones hubo una sesión de reflexión. En mi papelito escribí justo eso: es impresionante presenciar tanto talento y tanto poder, son mujeres increíbles todas y cada una de las presentes. ¿Todas? En ese momento me di cuenta que yo también estaba ahí, y yo también estaba siendo reconocida en ese momento como una mujer increíble que trabaja a diario para el beneficio del mundo. ¡Es algo difícil de sentir para alguien con un severo caso de síndrome de la impostora!
Entonces, ¿qué es lo que yo puedo hacer por nuestra red? ¿Cómo llevo esta inspiración a la comunidad AMC? Sería hermoso tener un encuentro AMC donde nos podamos ver las integrantes de la red y podamos compartir y convivir, pero por el momento no contamos con los recursos. Mi experiencia en la cumbre me llevó a pensar mucho en cómo hemos estado manejando la AMC. Y pienso que el Equipo Núcleo, desde el norte de México, no podemos por completo tejer redes de apoyo en todos los países de Latinoamérica. No al nivel que tenemos como objetivo. ¿Y, cómo le hacemos?
Creo que lo que necesitamos son Capítulos AMC. Grupos locales o regionales que puedan realizar actividades en sus regiones, que se puedan reunir presencialmente cuando les sea posible para realmente colaborar, conectar y convivir genuinamente. Podemos trabajar con estos capítulos para encontrar voces para el blog, integrantes para el directorio y participación para los Aprende de, y así poder tener representación de todo el continente de una manera más orgánica. El resto de la comunidad internacional seguirá abierta y disponible para cualquier integrante que busque apoyo.
La Cumbre WiNN 2022 me ayudó a entender mejor lo que yo, personalmente, busco en la AMC. Y me ayudó a entender lo importante que es tener una red creada desde Latinoamérica para Latinoamérica. Conectarnos para apoyarnos es nuestro eslogan, y seguimos en la búsqueda de herramientas y estrategias para que la Asociación Mujeres y Conservación sea una verdadera red de apoyo.
“Thank you for everything you do for my daughter,” was how Shristi Shresta, lead organizer, closed her opening presentation for the Women in Nature Network Summit. At first I didn't understand what she meant, but after analyzing it for a couple of seconds, I understood. Each and every one of us is working daily for a better world, not only for our own homes, regions, families, and biodiversity but for those of the entire world. Our actions form waves and echoes that reach every corner of the planet in one way or another.
The Women in Nature Network (WiNN) Summit is an international event that took place in Kathmandu, Nepal, with the intention of connecting women working in environmental conservation this September 2022. I was awarded a scholarship by WiNN to participate in this event, and I am eternally grateful to them for trusting and investing in me. WiNN is an international women's group in environmental conservation. Its WiNN Summit is annual, each year in a different place on the planet. Their scholarships are open to any woman from anywhere.
I cannot express how inspiring it was to meet so many women conservationists from so many countries doing such impressive work. I realized that unemployment in the conservation sector is not only a problem in Mexico or Latin America but throughout the world. During the event, there were presentations on ecofeminism, activism, health, self-care, and science, among other topics, and the participation of local and international women. Witnessing so much talent and so much power in one place makes one feel very small.
This feeling of "I'm not as amazing as them" highlighted some my days. But during the closing of the presentations, there was a reflection session. On my piece of paper, I wrote just that: it is impressive to witness so much talent, and so much power, each and every one of the women present are incredible. Each and every one? I then realized that I was there too, and I was also being recognized at that moment as an incredible woman who works daily for the benefit of the world. It's a difficult realization for someone with a severe case of impostor syndrome!
So what can I do for our network? How do I bring this inspiration to the AMC community? It would be nice to have a meeting with AMC where the members of the network can see each other, and we can share and live together, but at the moment, we don't have the resources. My experience at the summit led me to think a lot about how we have been running the AMC. And I think that the Core Team from northern Mexico cannot completely weave support networks in all the countries of Latin America. Not at the level we're aiming for. So, how do we do it?
I think what we need are AMC Chapters. Local or regional groups that can carry out activities in their regions, who can meet in person when possible to really collaborate, connect and genuinely live together. These chapters can help us find voices for the blog, members for the directory, participants for our virtual events, and thus be able to have representation from the entire continent in a more organic way. The rest of the international community will remain open and available to any member seeking support.
The 2022 WiNN Summit helped me better understand what I personally look for in the AMC. And it helped me understand how important it is to have a network created from Latin America for Latin America. Connecting to support each other is our slogan, and we continue to search for tools and strategies so that the Asociación Mujeres y Concervación becomes a true support network.
